No doubt many of you have met Sample, one of our chillest, and friendliest employees. Why so chill? Because they understand the value of a vibrant cycling community, and what better way to strengthen that community than by welcoming everyone regardless of cycling discipline. Of course, if Sample had to pick a favorite we bet their heart lies on the track. They pour a lot of blood, sweat, and enthusiasm into the racing community at Alpenrose Velodrome, and it shows. Spending an afternoon watching the races and it’s easy to see where that passion comes from, there’s so much cheering for one another you forget it’s a competition at all.

That’s why we’re so proud to show off Samps’ Dixie Flyer track bike. This frame was personally passed to Sample by the man behind Dixie-Flyer himself, Bobby Walthour Sr. Locally, Bobby is known for his active support in the track racing scene helping many racers like Sample get on quality frames making the sport more accessible, and subsequently developing a stronger racing community.

This Dixie-Flyer as pictured is a full carbon frame and fork, decked out with carbon Vision cranks, and Sample’s “Whip-Skid” wheelset (H-Plus Son rims laced to hubs of the track racing variety). Don’t be shocked if you see it with any variety of racing wheels, and gear combos, because Track Racing.

This feature comes at a particularly important time as the future of Alpenrose hangs in the balance. A pending sale may very well change, or at worst completely halt, all cycling access to this historic site. This change would impact Cyclocross racing, and the Velodrome itself, an irreplaceable part of the Portland Cycling community. That’s why all of us here at Sellwood Cycle are doing what we can help save Alpenrose: This Saturday, Spetember 7th, we will be donating 10% of gross sales to OBRA to help save Alpenrose.

So make those dollars count and chip in for Alpenrose, a Portland Institution. If not for us, then do it for Samps!
