This Kona Sutra Ltd was custom built by none other than Cary Miller. He has a certain flair for a well-sculpted bike. You might remember his previous Kona Humu build, and this is basically the same bike but with an upgraded chassis. After seeing the new Sutra Ltd frame at the Kona Bike Shop up in Bellingham he immediately ordered one for himself and set about swapping parts.
Ultimately he wound up with an amazing commuting rig. Built around wide handlebars, a Shimano Zee 1x drivetrain, and some dangerously supple Compass tires. And why not? The frame is already an outstanding platform for nearly every type of riding, so why not make a ride-everything type of commuter out of it. And that matte orange color is SO hot. Photos rarely do it justice.
Build details are as follows:
- Shimano Zee Drivetrain: with a Wolftooth 38t chainring, and Shimano XT 11-36 cassette
- Shimano Deore hydraulic disc brakes
- WTB KOM i25 rims, wrapped in Compass Snoqualmie Pass 700×44 tires (with tubes)
- Chromag Fubars OSX (780), and Chromag seatpost
- Paul Components Stem
- PDW Full Metal fenders
The frame provides a stiff and responsive feel, and Cary has done his best to replicate the fit of his mountain bike (mostly so there isn’t the whole “getting used to” a different bike every time he hops on) which gives this bike a solid yet playful feel. Easy enough to get to work, coffee in-hand, or get a little rowdy while taking the long way home.
Well done Cary. All bikes should be orange. A black Brooks B17 would look so great on this bike…
What, no dynamo lighting? <3
